Top 10 Nuclear Power Plants In The World

Most of world biggest nuclear power plants are situated in East Asia. They are measured by their net capacity.Biggest nuclear plants have the best safety measures and regular inspections. The safety of the nuclear power plants has caught the eye of the people after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.But at present nuclear power plant disasters are the most rare accidents in the world. So down below we can see what are the best nuclear power plants by the net capacity.

1.Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity:7,965MW.

Tokyo Electric Co.'s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant is the world largest nuclear power plant in the world.
It is situated in japan.
It has seven water boiling reactors.
First five units produce 1,100MW from each.Other two produsce 1.356MW from each.
The first unit began the operation in 1985 and the last unit started the operation in 1997.
At present these operations are paused and will resume after the safety messures.

2.Bruce Nuclear Generating Station

Net Capacity: 6,234MW

Bruce Nuclear Generating Station is the second largest nuclear power plant in the world and it is situated in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada.
This one has eight pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR) with gross capacities varying from 786MW to 891MW.
The last unit's operation was started in 1987.
Bruce 1 was shut down in 1997 due to long term shut down and reopened in 2012.
Bruce 2 also reopened in 2012 due to long term shut down which occured in 1995.

3.Hanul Nuclear Power Plant (formerly, Ulchin)

Net Capacity:6,189MW

This one wons the third place and it was named as Hanul Nuclear Power Plant in 2013.
This id the South Korean;s largest nuclear power plant.
Hanul NPP has  with six pressurised water reactor (PWR) units.Another two reactors are being added.
These two reactors will produce 1,350MW and it will increase the NC to 8,608MW in 2018.

4.Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant, South Korea

Net Capacity:5,899MW

This NPP holds the rank of fourth place.
The power plant, operated by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), consists of six Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) reactor units commissioned in 1986, 1986, 1994, 1995, 2001 and 2002 respectively.
This NPP formely known as the Yeonggwang Nuclear Power Plant.
The third unit was paused due to cracks found in its control rod guide tube in 2012 and now it was resumed after eight months of repairs.

5.Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine

Net Capacity:5,700MW

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest NPP in the Europe and in the world and ranks the fifth place.
This NPP is situated in Enerhodar city of Ukraine and features six operational VVER-1000 PWR units brought online since 1984 through 1995.
This NPP generates more than 20% of the country's total electricity generation.

6.Gravelines Nuclear Power Plant, France

Net Capacity:5,460MW

The power station is located at Gravelines of Northern France and it holds the sixth place.
This NPP has  six similar capacity PWR units built between 1980 and 1985.
This power plant is in the control of  the French electric utility company Electricite De France.
The Gravelines Nuclear Power Plant had the able to create a benchmark in August 2010 by delivering its 1,000 billionth kWh of electricity.

7.Paluel Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity: 5,528MW

The Paluel Nuclear Power Plant is situated 40km away from the city of Diepp, France.
This NPP holds the rank of seventh and consists  four pressurised water reactors and produce 1,382MW  from each.
Construction of the nuclear power station started in 1977.
The first two units of the plant were came to online 1984.
The third and fourth units were finished in 1985.
This is the second largest French NPP, after Gravelines.

8.Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity:5,200MW

Cattenom Nuclear Power Plant is situated in Cattnom, France.
This NPP is the 8th largest NPP in the world.
Nuclear Power Plant has four PWRs which gives 1,362MW from each.
Construction of the plant began in 1979 and commercial operations began in April 1987.
The last reactor of the plant was connected to grid in 1991.
The power plant is owned and operated by EDF.
The power transformers in unit 1 and unit 3 caught fire in 2013.

9.Oi Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity:4,710MW

Oi Nuclear Power Plant located in the Japanese town alled as Oi.
This NPP has four rectors, two of them provide 1,175MW and other two give 1,180MW.
But only unit 3 and unit 4 are the operational units.
Kansai Electric Power Company owns and operates the plant.

10.Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity:4,038MW.

People's Republic of China is home to the tenth largest operational nuclear power station in the world - the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant.
Construction of Qinshan NPP started in 1985.
The plant became operational in 1992.
The Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant has  two PWRs and two PHWR.
This NPP is currently operating with seven units.

Special Note about Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant

Net Capacity: 4,268MW

This one is the tenth largest NPP in the world if it is operational.
The plant is owned and operated by TEPCO.
The plant consists of four BWR units with gross capacity of 1,100MW and net capacity of 1,067MW each.
The powerful tsunami waves triggered by the 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake caused meltdowns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi NPP.
Fukushima Daini survived the disaster because of the emergency shutdown of its reactors.
Restoration activities were underway for maintaining cold shutdown of the station, as of May 2013.
